Next stop: Apartments and homes
The Central Station project began in December 1999, after Holliday Development recognized the historic and geographic value of an abandoned train station in West Oakland. The property consists of nearly 26 acres at the intersection of I-880 and West Grand Avenue—a six-minute BART ride to downtown San Francisco. Fiber-optic cable has already been laid at the site, meaning high-speed computer connections will be easy. The 20,000-square-foot train depot, built in 1912 and designated a historic landmark, will be renovated and serve as inspiration for the surrounding development. Holliday Development is currently working in partnership with HFH Ltd., a local apartment developer, and BUILD West Oakland, an affiliate of BRIDGE Housing, to create an urban village of 1000+ homes, ancillary retail and a renovated train station.
